Students Visit SC Philharmonic

Ladies and Gentlemen's Club Members Enjoy the Symphony

Members of Laurens County School District 55’s (LCSD 55) Ladies and Gentlemen’s Clubs and the Laurens District High School (LDHS) strings program were provided with a special opportunity this past Saturday evening. Both groups boarded buses at the LCSD 55 District Office for a trip to Columbia and an evening of entertainment provided by the South Carolina Philharmonic at the Koger Center.

In addition to club facilitators and Strings Director Andrew Chevarria, the students were accompanied to the symphony by Dr. Stephen Peters and his wife, Dr. Angela Peters, School Board member Mrs. Terri Martin, and Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, Mrs. Tara Dean and her husband, Laurens Elementary School Principal, Phillip Dean.

Both the students and the adults enjoyed the evening as the Philharmonic’s Music Director and Conductor, Morihiko Nakahara led the symphony through its musical selections in the Philharmonic’s season finale performance. According to Phillip Dean, one of the pieces most enjoyed by the students was the symphony’s performance of the soundtrack from the movie “Babe,” which was definitely a familiar piece and was included in the performance especially for our students. According to Dr. Stephen Peters, the evening “was incredible!” Peters went on to say that, “educational experiences must extend beyond the classroom walls and also occur on Saturdays.” Another special treat during the performance was the unusual inclusion of an organ in the ensemble. The organ was included for the performance of Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3, “Organ.”

The trip was made possible through the generosity of the South Carolina Philharmonic who donated 200 tickets to LCSD 55. Students from each of LCSD 55’s four middle schools and the high school were able to make the trip along with their adult club facilitators.
