What is Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)?

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

What is LCSD 55 doing?

Laurens 55 has made Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) a focus for grades PreK-12.

We are working with administrators, teachers, families and the State Department of Education to learn how to create an emotional learning environment that responds to the needs of adults and students and how to teach social skills that are appropriate at each grade level.

What are we learning about the brain?

We are working with a consultant to identify SEL instructional strategies that respond tohow the brain learns.

Three key strategies include:

1. Welcoming strategies school wide and in the classroom.

2. Engaging strategies that include brain breaks to focus attention.

3. Optimistic closure that creates a positive way to reinforce learning.

Lessons and Resources from the SCDE

Research demonstrates that students who receive support for social and emotional learning in schools do better academically, socially and behaviorally. Social-emotional learning has also been shown to positively impact economic mobility and mental health outcomes. Developing these skills in our students is an important part of meeting the needs of the whole child.

The South Carolina Department of Education is focused on promoting social and emotional learning to enhance the building of positive school climates and the healthy development of young people.

Parents, teachers, and students can access resources and lesson plans on the SCDE website at https://sel.ed.sc.gov/
